Question 1: What do you believe is the most important problem facing Bridgeport today and what, specifically, do you intend to do to address it if elected?
Vertical Divider

MaryEvette Brantley (D)

The current problems facing Bridgeport today are crime, taxes, blighted properties, illegal dumping, lack of youth unemployment, limited affordable housing, homelessness, food deserts, human trafficking, lack of immigration services,  illegal drug sells, and gun violence coupled with an inadequate school system.

I will continue to work with community partners to address the aforementioned problems.  As an incumbent I will seek to server on various legislative committees in order to assure funding and support for non profits in the community that serve constituents effected by theses issues.  I am committed to serving on our budget committee and fighting for appropriate funding our Board of  Education  and our Police Department.

Bridgeport’s many problems grow and feed off each other, but we can fix them. With our budget problem, we have less money for education and after school activities which translates to problems for Bridgeport families and children and then we have elected officials who are not attending meetings they are supposed to be making important decisions for our city and then we have a lack of trust in our officials and police as no one is communicating and talking to each other and our citizens do not have the information they need or want. We have a trust problem in our officials and we have a great and growing challenge with our budget; there are many solutions to the budget problem including addressing our pension debt, accountability for police overtime, cutting out several unnecessary items out of the budget and more.

The greatest challenge facing Bridgeport is our budget. Currently the budget on a year to year basis is encumbered by pension debt. Contracts that are causing us to accrue this debt must be revisited. Funding to education has stayed static over the past 4 years while the city attorney's office, the police and fire department budgets have ballooned, 32%, 21% and 19% growth respectively. With all due respect to the brave men and women of our police, including overtime money earned in their pensions is debilitating the city. During these same four years funding for elementary school teachers has changed by -4%! This is not okay and every effort to change this trend should be made. The problem of our budget goes to our values. What we fund shows what we care about.
Question 2: How do you plan to keep your constituents informed about your actions as a City Council member?
Vertical Divider

MaryEvette Brantley (D)

I would get information out to constitutes by using masse media, the Internet, the city's website, utilize the religious community, net work with community and fraternal organizations

I was born and raised in the great City Of Bridgeport and attended the public school system. I am a proud graduate of Bassick Senior High School ant the University of Connecticut  where I majored in Political Science.

My running mate and I plan to use an email newsletter, our website, social media mailers, town halls and editorials to keep our constituents and the community at large of our actions. We also plan to use those tools to get feedback on decisions from our constituents as we are elected by the people and want to represent their best interests. Transparency and communicate are key to our campaign.

Kyle Langan (D)

We are currently in the process of building community power as we campaign for office.  If elected I plan to utilize a combination of e-mail blasts, website posts, mailers, town halls, social media, and editorials (of which I've written two during the campaign) to stay in partnership with my constituents. We have an extremely low voter turnout rate in our city that stems from a lack of transparency and communication in our elected officials. It would be the job of myself and my staff to reverse that trend.
